Ida B. Wells Lynching Campaign  and the history of Lynching
  1. Mrs. Ida B. Wells fought for the right to keep her seat on the railroad by bitting the conductor on the back of his hand.  Although she did not succeed she sent out a lawsuit against the railroad company which lead to her journalism career.
  2. Three of Mrs. Well's friends were lynched because their People's Grocery Company became a threat to white business owners.  They were sent to jail for defending themselves after these white business owners tried to attack them.  While in jail a lynch-mob broke in and lynched these three men to death
  3. She continued her anti-lynching fight by writing "Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in All Its Phases".
  4. Mrs. Ida B. Wells was the first black women to run for public office in the US.

  • On August 3rd, 1935 in Yreka, California Clyde Johnson was lynched by nearly 50 people for being accused for the murder of the police officer Dunsmuir.
  • George and Ed Silsbee was lynches on January 20th,1900 in Scott, Kansas for an unknown reason.
  • On Aug. 6th, 1906 in Salisbury, North Carolina Nease G., John G. Jack D., Henry Lee, and George Irwin were lynched for being accused of murdering a family.

  • Dick Robinson was lynched on Oct. 6th 1906 in Pritchard Station, Alabama randomly by white males who wanted to put an end to "innocent bloodshed".

Black Women's Bodies

1. Response to Harriet Tubman's sex tape video

  • Russel Simmons was not remorseful for the video he posted.  He only apologized to please the public.  He mentioned that he is a "very liberal person with tough skin" therefor he doesn't find anything wrong with the video but is only apologizing because he is being asked to.
  • Jamilah Lemieux was lost of words from the disgust this video brought her.  She feels yes Russel is in the music industry and there are different views on women, as displayed in their music videos.  As for Harriet Tubman, Sergerna Truth and other black historic women; they are basically "safe" from the sort of disrespect.  It shouldn't have even be thought upon to make a video.
  • Jeff Johnson was very strong opinionated towards the video and most certainly Russel Simmons. He believes that many people do not have historical context, and do not know the history of our own lives.  The serious maters of the past are not understood, therefore young individuals make a mockery out of it.  People have to be held accountable and receive consequences.  Until then nothing will change and things such as this video will continue to occur.
2. Sarah Bartman
  • William Dunlop, a British doctor discovered Ms. Bartman and wanted her to travel with him to Europe.  His plan was to display her as a freak and to make money of her while she was basically prostituting.  After Sarah's death she was held on display in Musee de l'homee in Paris.  Society called her Hottentot Venus which it was a name given to people with cattle.
3. Minister of Sweden
  • The Minister of Sweden was forced to resign from her position after being "racist" cutting a cake designed as an African women.  According to the article the cake was made to display the issue of female genital mutilation.  Kitimbwa stated, "To say you did this for a good cause only makes the mockery of people who are victims racism and circumcision worse". Also the Association for African Swedes said that the cake was a crude racist caricature which "makes a mockery of racism".  In all, everyone seems to fully agree that the making of this cake let alone cutting it was flat out disrespectful and cruel.
4. 2 Chains video in comparison to the Minister of Sweden incident
  • 2 chains video displays a large amount of disrespect and a lack of an education, just as the situation with the minister of sweden.  It is obvious that both do not know the history and background of the african history.  If they did they would not have even thought to do such ignorant things.  The difference between the two are simply that 2 chains is of african decent and the minister is not.  Although both are equally unacceptable, the public does not view 2 chains video to be as bad because he is black.  While the minister is a white women making a mockery of the an african.  If they were to fully know and understand the history of an african individual I'm sure none of this would have occurred.

The Black Family and Willie Lynch Letter

There are many ways in which the "Willie Lynch's Letter" relates to todays society.  In this letter it says this method would still be affective for the next 300 years, it is exactly 300 years later and a lot has changes.  For example, women were forced to be very dependent on their work, masters, and husbands, while this may be still accurate for some people many women are very independent, living on their own and caring for themselves not needing anyone to reply on.

African-Americans are often talked down upon and degraded by society and their opinions.  Everyone believes blacks to be the center of crime, drugs, abuse, and perceive African-Americans uneducated.  While not speaking for everyone,  African-Americans try to stick together for the most part and treat each other with respect.

I believe the Willie Lynch Letter to be non-fiction because all of this actually occurred everyday for years.  This was the life our ancestors lived. Although it seems too gory and sad to be true, it is!

During prison he refused to see his family because they couldn't do anything for him and because they harbored doubts about his innocence.  Even after today he doesn't speak to his family.
